Our investment criteria and interests for 2017 and beyond

Dear Partners, Friends and Colleagues:
Happy New Year to you all…. Hope you had an awesome Holiday Season as I did. Wishing you all the very best for 2017 and beyond.
With a new year comes new investment resolutions – especially given the nature of the game to be played with Donald J. Trump now as our new President.

Venture Capital and Private Equity activity in Latin America

Some Latin American economies might in fact be better prepared to recover from the crisis than several of the more developed economies and are, in principle, in better economic shape as a number of them have generated stabilization funds to support their respective economies.

While the growth of markets elsewhere in the world such as the Chinese economy has also contributed significantly to Latin America’s rise, a lot of those Western Hemisphere countries are resource-rich to start with, so they have enjoyed significant additional benefits from the economic development in China. We forecast this Latin American-Asian relationship to further strengthen as China’s demands for access to Latin America’s natural resources create an infrastructure in the region that will enable resources to flow back to China. Hence, don’t be surprised to see sooner than later billions of dollars invested in infrastructure for that purpose. For Latin America, this economic boom promises continued political and social stability.

Dollars Versus Syrian Humanitarianism - Is There a Return on Investment?

I strongly believe that allowing more refugees to move to the United States - a solution that would certainly work, would carry little in the way of short-term financial costs, and would likely provide a powerful boost to the US economy and drastically increase the living standards of Syrians who are able to relocate.

If we're actually serious about helping Syrian people - both people who've stayed and refugees - it's not enough to identify an intervention that seems like it could make things better and then declare that it's the only viable solution. You have to compare it with alternative plans, and see which produces the most good at the least cost. And it's very, very hard to argue that the kind of intervention that could have plausibly prevented the bloodshed of the past four years would have done more good, at lower cost, than simply issuing green cards to every Syrian who wants one - or even issuing them to just 1 million, or 500,000 - and providing airlifts to bring people here.

Financial Policy Council Hosts Leading Crowdfunding Experts

Financial Policy Council will host a private briefing with a panel of four crowdfunding experts who will discuss how Wall Street investment firms can strengthen market share and viability through crowdfunding. The speakers Georgia P. Quinn, D.J. Paul, Chris Tyrell, and Joy Schoffler each have unique backgrounds in various industries, but share a common, extensive understanding of the financial technology sector and the effect that crowdfunding will bring to the investment world. Ziad Abelnour, the founder and chairman of Financial Policy Council Inc., will moderate the panel.

Once overlooked entirely by institutional investors, crowdfunding has now become a solid contender in the financial world, eclipsing angel investments and eventually overtaking venture capital as the primary method for funding new businesses.

Trading Physical Oil: The Art of the Deal

As part of Blackhawk’s close group of family and friends; and to set the record straight, I thought I’d share with you those important tips you need to know if you’re actively involved in oil derivatives transactions in the physical commodities trading world.

As you may or may not know, the reality today is that oil buyers are a dime a dozen, real fuel is the issue. The secondary market is for the most part composed of “fake offers” around the world doing a circle jerk on the Internet as people who have the real oil already know where to sell it.

By the same token, no Major or legitimate buyer will issue a LOI, ICPO, nor will they issue any POF or pre advise of any kind, ever before seeing POP. Hence, our Modus Operandi is and has always been very simple: Prove the product, send an invoice, we will close it! Very simple…..We will also sell under the exact same circumstances. The exception is an unknown buyer to us where we’ll have to Swift an RWA to prove financial capability.

SMART INVESTING: THE ART OF THE DEAL

Having spent the last three decades of my life in the money world, I am frequently asked what are the smartest investing tips I would offer people looking in retrospect for someone starting his money career today….

Well here are my basic tips – some trivial , others much less obvious – for anyone wanting to build something not just of value but most importantly of meaning too.

1. It is not easy. Even some of the legendary investors like Jesse Livermore says it took him 5 years to learn. Warren Buffett began when he was 8 and learned the Graham approach when he was around 22. So it took him 14 years. Why should it take anybody less? There is no ‘silver bullet’. Investing is hard work and overnight success is indeed 15 years.

5 Business Lessons Learned in 2014

I learned that no matter what happens, or how bad it seems today, life does go on, and it will be better tomorrow. I’ve learned that making a “living” is not the same thing as making a “life.” I’ve learned that life sometimes gives you a second chance. I’ve learned that whenever I decide something with an open heart, I usually make the right decision. I’ve learned that every day you should reach out and touch someone. I’ve learned that I still have a lot to learn. I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.
